Super Encoder
I just love watching videos on my PC and sometimes even capture some video from TV such as music videos so that I can sit and watch them later. The main problem I face other than shitty quality of my TV signal(yeah never figured out how to capture video from my DTH and the cable is too small too.) is that the captured files end up being terribly huge. I can’t have such files taking too much of space since, I am a download junkie. The only way is to convert them to small avi files by encoding them. I am really bad at encoding and never understand a thing on how to encode video files. I use AutoGK to encode sometimes but I prefer to use it only for big files like movies as such.
I came across this encoder named Super. Super stands for Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer. The thing I liked about it was it’s super simple interface. If anyone just goes around and tried it for like half an hour they would know exactly what to do. I really loved how all these different options helps you understand how to encode a big file to small size. I know hard core encoders would prefer Guardian Knot or Virtual Dub Mod over this anyday, but personally going through all these options is quite tough for me. It took me around 3 hours to figure out how to save a marked segment of a file(Yeah I am too stupid). So, I always prefer easy methods to do these things. I would recommend Super encoder to everyone since its really helpful and as it’s also free.
Download Method: This is the only problem I have with downloading Super from its website. I was not able to figure out how to download it from it’s website for a long time and found the answer on net somewhere, so , I am thankful to the person who had written about it. First of all go to Super’s website here. Then go to the end of the page and click on this text “Start Downloading SUPER ©“. This will take you to another page, on this page there is “download and use” written which you need to click. This will lead you to another page. This is fortunately the last page, here just go down and download it by clicking the text “Download SUPER © setup file“. You might say why not directly use the download link and download it but if you use it will directly lead you to first page so its totally worthless.

My new domain and new host
I am using this post to setup my Technorati Profile for this blog here.
I have at last shifted to a new domain and a new hosting. I bought this domain through Deep’s company Web1.in and the hosting is thanks to my admin Harsh and super admin Surya. I have been thinking about it for a long time and I thought, I should do it so here it is. It took me a hell lot of time to setup all the plugins and stuff but my admin(Harsh) was good enough to answer all my questions and queries. So he help me setup the whole blog here. My main domain karthiksn.com will be used to showcase by weird talent in web-designing as I will be designing my own page there.
I have shifted all my old posts to this place and made sure that they were deleted from the earlier place. I am waiting for the great google god to index this site then i will be a bit more happy. I will be posting here regularly so keep coming to watch.
Open SuSE with Beryl
I would like to start with saying people on windows who haven’t seen a 3D desktop definitely need to read this one. I have been using windows for years now and have heard many people say that linux is the most unfriendliest operating system, I never asked questions about it. Read more »
The Real Difference
My very good friend Chrono had posted nice stuff on geeks some months back. I had thought about it then but not till recently someone sparked it again in my mind. I was thinking what is the difference between a nerd and a geek and who defines the difference. I have always thought what am I a geek or a nerd, never got an answer to that question though. Simply because maybe I really don’t know if I am a geek or nerd material. Anyways apart from that I always believed there is a great difference between a geek and a nerd. Some say it doesn’t matter but to me everything matters.
Lets take a look at what Geeks are. Well, according to my opinion any person who has some special interest in something and learns things about it and loves to question even its basics to understand it fully is a geek. For a good example, a computer geek. I believe some one who has special interest in computers or any special part in computer and dares to pursue to understand what really it is and why it is. They are totaly passionate to what they are doing and even dare to ask question about the basics so that they learn more. They whole heartedly believe in what they are doing. I believe that this is what a Geek is and what he does.
A nerd, well many people proclaim to be “Computer Nerds”, I am sure more than half of them even don’t know what is the definition of Nerds. We see in movies that people wearing spectacles and being different are nerds but really that is no where being a nerd. Nerds, according to me are different from Geeks in many aspects. Firstly lack of questioning, that means accepting given facts. They accept facts that have been given to them without a question. Understanding is not preliminary to them, just learning it or mugging it up is important. Never asking what they really don’t know, trying to hide that aspect always. But these people know everything about something without any understanding. I never say that a guy wearing spectacles or looking different is a nerd. Nerds lack a quality of making the world move around them, I mean they really never have lots of acquaintances. But one thing the people they know are truest of friends. This makes a nerds unique, bookish knowledge makes nerds unique.
Geeks have lots of acquaintances but out of them maybe one or two true friends because they love to make the world spin around them. Nerds and Geeks though similar have many differences. Both are same but still so varied. It really feels good when you have them as good friends because they normally won’t back bite you for anything else because both know how to stay true.
P.S: Note this are my ideas and thinking, I believe many people might have different ideas and I respect all ideas and would love to see them in comments here but please no flamings.
Another P.S: Yeah this note is for people who self proclaim they are geek or nerd without much thought on what they are so I believe they can learn from this post and any future comments what really a Geek or Nerd is.
Random Thoughts: Well, after a mind twisting post this post comes consecutively within an hour or so, I think I went overboard with philosophy in last and this post.

To Speak or not to Speak
In my class some days ago, we had a disscussion about the topic “Speech is better than writing or not”. It was then, it came to my notice that people really have forogtten the importance of writing. I saw kids saying this and that about speaking but only very few(three to be exact including me) where talking that writing is important. I know that both are important but I was shocked to see how people blindly believed that speaking was more important than writing. I was thnking what if our historians never wrote the history or recorded it, all our history might have been just some fairytale told to us by our grand-mothers. Very few of them did believe that both are important but weren’t able to explain why.
It was like they forgot that their languages would have been non-existent, if there were no script for it. I believe that soon people will stop using pen and paper but still the scripts of all languages will live on in the computers. I guess we do soon realize that if we neglect writing we might not be having good times ahead.

Chennai Techspot Meet
Deep and Ashish had come to Chennai for the BlogCamp Unconference, so we had decided why not we meet here and make it a Techspot Forum members meet. With that thought we met at their room in The Residency Hotel. I reached the hotel around 6:00 pm and was lurking around here and there till 6:30 pm and went to their room at 6:30 pm. Ashish opened the door witha big smile and I found Qwerty and Sathya(Sathish) sitting in the chairs and Deep behind his laptop who was trying to do red eye reduction with his photos from BlogCamp which I tried too but was unsuccessful at it. Then we started talks Ashish ordered some pesticides(Pepsi and Miranda), we were first talking about GNU and Red Hat Courses and some how got diverted to the topic of me being a loner and all that but they did give me some things to ponder on which I am pondering on. I came to know that I have lot to learn about Open Source Software and also learnt how different is the perspective about linux from a programmer’s point of view and a user’s point of view. We talked about a lot of things but I forgot to ask Ashish how his kids were(damn me). Then they had to empty the room by 8:00 pm and they packed up and we were ready to move. We went down and had a small chat once again I gave Deep and Ashish directions to go to a restaurant they had seen earlier and wanted to have dinner there. I couldn’t join in and niether could Qwerty or Sathish as Sathish lived far away, QM was supposed to go somewhere and me I was just keeping a promise to be back before 9:00 pm. Well we then bid farewell to them Sathya left for his home and I and Qwerty went to a bus stop where he and I got Rickshaws(seperate) to head back home. I got of at the wrong place and went walking the rest distance which wasn’t much(I got down at wrong spot purposely because I love walking). This way our meet ended and I must say I was really satisfied by the Meet next time I will definately make it to the BlogCamp and will be with them for a longer time so that we can talk about lot more things. Its nearly 12 am and they might have boarded the plane by now I guess. There is something else too that I forgot to mention Deep had taken SEO for Blogs Session in the BlogCamp and I can’t believe that I missed it. Now this makes my resolution much more stronger that I am definately going to attend the next year’s BlogCamp where ever it takes place. So i will keep editing this post to add links to others who post on it specially Deep and Ashish as they have the photos.
