Blogging as a Subject
I for the first time really mean what my title says. I had just a thought what would happen if in some near future blogging actually became a topic in the curriculum of the schools. We might see a mad rush of young students coming out to blog on net and actually competing with their fellow classmates probably for grades. Maybe their grades will be determined by the pagerank they have for their own blog.
Though it’s a quite innovative idea I believe, but bad for the health of upcoming bloggers as many of those kids might grow up to take blogging as an interest and end up thinking that blogging is just about pageranks. One might presume that nothing good might come out of this but actually someting good will come out of it.
Someone with a spirit of a true blogger might end up making a blog that would tell others about the happenings of the school. They might not blog for the grades but for the pure joy of freedom a blogger gets while typing a post. They would definitely be the true bloggers who will or may take up blogging seriously in life.
Many subjects have been degraded just because they were pulled into the curriculum making them a part of the studies. I personally believe that subjects like arts and crafts should never be part of curriculum but should be extracurricular activities though many schools in Inida have them as subjects making them a subject were kids compete rather than enjoying what they are doing. Heck I would say adding computers to curriculum is bad as some people have keen interest and want to learn something different in computers but as they are limited to their schools, they learn nothing but old programs and stuff that is near obsolescence and teachers who don’t know anything other than what the kids have in their books.
But unfortunately we can’t stop time and as time flies by these words may come true at some point making the whole blogging scenario nothing but a big joke.
The Real Difference
My very good friend Chrono had posted nice stuff on geeks some months back. I had thought about it then but not till recently someone sparked it again in my mind. I was thinking what is the difference between a nerd and a geek and who defines the difference. I have always thought what am I a geek or a nerd, never got an answer to that question though. Simply because maybe I really don’t know if I am a geek or nerd material. Anyways apart from that I always believed there is a great difference between a geek and a nerd. Some say it doesn’t matter but to me everything matters.
Lets take a look at what Geeks are. Well, according to my opinion any person who has some special interest in something and learns things about it and loves to question even its basics to understand it fully is a geek. For a good example, a computer geek. I believe some one who has special interest in computers or any special part in computer and dares to pursue to understand what really it is and why it is. They are totaly passionate to what they are doing and even dare to ask question about the basics so that they learn more. They whole heartedly believe in what they are doing. I believe that this is what a Geek is and what he does.
A nerd, well many people proclaim to be “Computer Nerds”, I am sure more than half of them even don’t know what is the definition of Nerds. We see in movies that people wearing spectacles and being different are nerds but really that is no where being a nerd. Nerds, according to me are different from Geeks in many aspects. Firstly lack of questioning, that means accepting given facts. They accept facts that have been given to them without a question. Understanding is not preliminary to them, just learning it or mugging it up is important. Never asking what they really don’t know, trying to hide that aspect always. But these people know everything about something without any understanding. I never say that a guy wearing spectacles or looking different is a nerd. Nerds lack a quality of making the world move around them, I mean they really never have lots of acquaintances. But one thing the people they know are truest of friends. This makes a nerds unique, bookish knowledge makes nerds unique.
Geeks have lots of acquaintances but out of them maybe one or two true friends because they love to make the world spin around them. Nerds and Geeks though similar have many differences. Both are same but still so varied. It really feels good when you have them as good friends because they normally won’t back bite you for anything else because both know how to stay true.
P.S: Note this are my ideas and thinking, I believe many people might have different ideas and I respect all ideas and would love to see them in comments here but please no flamings.
Another P.S: Yeah this note is for people who self proclaim they are geek or nerd without much thought on what they are so I believe they can learn from this post and any future comments what really a Geek or Nerd is.
Random Thoughts: Well, after a mind twisting post this post comes consecutively within an hour or so, I think I went overboard with philosophy in last and this post.

Well if the topic didnt ring any bell then you might want to take a look here. Well the site seems down to me as of now but I am going to tell you what it is anyways. Well Its one of India’s biggest bloggers meet ever organised. I am sad that I came to know about it from newspaper rather directly from net. Well as it has been in India chennai has the highest number of bloggers. Many of them of them have come together to organise this event. The event is supposed to be gathering of many famous bloggers of chennai. Kiruba Shankar is also organizing this meet. Sorry for my ignorance but I never knew who was Chennai’s most popular blogger and it seems Kiruba Shankar is the guy. They seem to have great plans for this meet including making Robert Scoble attend it or he is probably going to attend it. IT doesnt seem to be like a any normal meet where you go and drink, eat and have fun. They seem to hold workshops and make it a bit more useful meet. They want all the bloggers to share whatever they have learnt from blogging and share their ideas. If I have read the newspaper right, it seems “Harvard University” is supporting it through their “Global Voices Online“. It seems from the news article that the plan has been well layout. I wait to see what it brings and how many people will join it.
Before I forget the Blogcamp is supposed to be held on September 9th and 10th

Sri Lanka back on time
Here I am quoting the news as i dont myself have much info on it.
Sri Lanka will put back its clocks by half an hour and revert to the practise of having the same standard time as India after its 10-year experiment to save daytime failed.
President Mahinda Rajapakse said the country will revert to its original standard time, five and a half hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, which the country maintained till May 1996.
“The change will take place from the Tamil and Sinhala New Year on April 13,” the state-run SLBC radio said. “The president made the order after complaints from parents that school children were inconvenienced by the new time.”
In May 1996, the then government advanced the clock by an hour and by October that year brought it back by half hour to put Sri Lanka six hours ahead of GMT.
The advancing of the clock in 1996 was rejected by Tamil Tiger rebels who control large parts of the island leading to two time zones within the island.
Sri Lanka reverting back to its old time zone would have implications for astrologers, computers, airline schedules and Microsoft whose latest Windows versions give Sri Lanka standard time as six hours ahead of GMT.
