You got Twittered

I have not posted a thing for a long time on the blog. I had saved two drafts on which I was working but a reinstall of XP and reinstall of Windows Live Writer and a little bit of dumbness from my part, lost it. So here I am with nothing to post. I may not write both of those posts again. So coming back to the main part, I have been bit by the twitter bug and I just can’t seem to ignore it. If you ask how it affects blogging, well I just simply put whatever I want to say in 140 or less characters and even get comments by many people on it. Twitter has even made me lazy and I hate to type too much now.

Gmail- You are never late

For all those people out there who always forget birthdays and anniversaries and even deadlines, Gmail has come for your rescue.

New! Gmail Custom TimeTM

Ever wish you could go back in time and send that crucial email that could have changed everything — if only it hadn’t slipped your mind? Gmail can now help you with those missed deadlines, missed birthdays and missed opportunities.

This feature is going to be the talk of the town for sometime.

Now you can be sure that all your emails will be sent in the past and you don’t have to meet any deadlines. Here is a testimonial by one of the user.

“I just got two tickets to Radiohead by being the ‘first’ to respond to a co-worker’s ‘first-come, first-serve’ email. Someone else had already won them, but I told everyone to check their inboxes again. Everyone sort of knows I used Custom Time on this one, but I’m denying it.”

Robby S., Paralegal

Then there is this clause that you can send only 10 mails per year because google thinks people will loose faith in emails. Here is what Gmail says about how many years back you can send the email to.

Is there a limit to how far back I can send email?

Yes. You’ll only be able to send email back until April 1, 2004, the day we launched Gmail. If we were to let you send an email from Gmail before Gmail existed, well, that would be like hanging out with your parents before you were born — crazy talk.

If you couldn’t guess it till now let me make it clear. This was the april fools joke of gmail. Yes, and it seems it is quite good. Compared to the paper mail one which was done last year. I just love google’s jokes.

And yeah don’t lose your chance of being the first humans to colonize space http://www.google.com/virgle/index.html

E-Paper

I am a very lazy guy and once I am on PC I don’t like getting up and searching through newspapers to find something that I remembered. We get "The New Indian Express"(it’s the Indian Express for South Region) here at home, though it’s not very good it’s bearable.Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

So back to the topic, since I hate getting up I wanted to see if they have a online record for their papers and to my surprise they have a very good online e-paper which works quite well. You can visit it by going here. It seems to have most of the news from the newspaper. I thought this was useful to people like me so posted it.

I would start getting "The Times of India" once they start publishing their Chennai Edition. I hope they are better than the rest.

Super Encoder

I just love watching videos on my PC and sometimes even capture some video from TV such as music videos so that I can sit and watch them later. The main problem I face other than shitty quality of my TV signal(yeah never figured out how to capture video from my DTH and the cable is too small too.) is that the captured files end up being terribly huge. I can’t have such files taking too much of space since, I am a download junkie. The only way is to convert them to small avi files by encoding them. I am really bad at encoding and never understand a thing on how to encode video files. I use AutoGK to encode sometimes but I prefer to use it only for big files like movies as such.

I came across this encoder named Super. Super stands for Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer. The thing I liked about it was it’s super simple interface. If anyone just goes around and tried it for like half an hour they would know exactly what to do. I really loved how all these different options helps you understand how to encode a big file to small size. I know hard core encoders would prefer Guardian Knot or Virtual Dub Mod over this anyday, but personally going through all these options is quite tough for me. It took me around 3 hours to figure out how to save a marked segment of a file(Yeah I am too stupid). So, I always prefer easy methods to do these things. I would recommend Super encoder to everyone since its really helpful and as it’s also free.

Download Method: This is the only problem I have with downloading Super from its website. I was not able to figure out how to download it from it’s website for a long time and found the answer on net somewhere, so , I am thankful to the person who had written about it. First of all go to Super’s website here. Then go to the end of the page and click on this text “Start Downloading SUPER ©“. This will take you to another page, on this page there is “download and use” written which you need to click. This will lead you to another page. This is fortunately the last page, here just go down and download it by clicking the text “Download SUPER © setup file“. You might say why not directly use the download link and download it but if you use it will directly lead you to first page so its totally worthless.

Google Book Search

Now this is something everyone studying college should have in their browser’s bookmark folders. I never actually thought that doing assignments in colleges would be so difficult. I didn’t actually think I would start getting assignments within two week of joining college but still. The professor who gives me assignment insists that we read some book and do it rather than getting stuff of net. The worst part is that I rarely find anything related to my topic on net which becomes quite tough then and as I have late college its quite tough to go to library and search for a relevant book as it might take hours to find something relevant. I always thought if we could google for books and find the specific page which we needed to look and I guess google had answered this sometime back.

One of my non-geeky friends was trying to help with my assignment and ended up giving me a link to this. I couldn’t believe that something like that existed. It was more of a dream come true. All I needed was the right keywords and it was done. I really sound like those cheap ass advertising comments that I get on my blog but really it was very helpful. It gives preview of books which one can then read from the browser itself. Some books have full book preview and some of them have just some pages for preview and one can actually select that which type of books we want to see which is also a good feature.

I was not mood in writing review of something old but still I thought it was something good and useful to guys like me who have Professors sitting on their head wanting them to go through a ton lots of books just to get two page of information, though its not bad its hectic and tiresome. I guess google gods always have answers for everything.

Oh yeah forgot that some guys in schools have these kinds of teachers too so its good for them too, didnt want to make it seem that college is tougher than school.

The New 7 wonders

I am not going to post about how happy I am about Taj Mahal getting into the new 7 wonders of the world. I am happy but my post is not about it. What I actually want to say here is how every once in a while someone comes up with the idea of making a new list for the seven wonders of the world and people go totally mad over it. I mean voting for a wonder of the world is the most ridiculous thing. These things should be judged by the most experienced and the best architects and archaeologists of the world. But what happens is lots of silly votes are taken in and used to see who wins.

I agree to what UNESCO had said about this that the method is not scientific and that its purely money making campaign. The method is definitely not scientific but the worst part is asking the people to vote and select it. I mean is this some kind of freaking reality show like American Idol or something. I did not understand how they could do such a thing. I mean architectural marvels like Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty were left out.

It was certainly amidst a lot of controversy with the whole Pyramid of Giza fiasco then later on UNESCO claiming it to be just a money making campaign. Well, I personally believe that it should not be accepted as something of a great importance. The only reason for me saying this thing is that I don’t general public can actually make out what is a wonder in terms of archaeological and architectural ways. It just reduces the seven wonders of the world to some cheap reality show on a world wide scale.
