Woodcut Artist

Posted by karthiksn

I love to write about important people I meet now and then. It feels good when I am able to tell people about the interesting things that have happened to me or interesting people that I have met. I recently met a woodcut artist from America. She was here as part of the Fullbright program to teach art students at the Government Arts college in Chennai about printmaking and drawing. Her name is Marcia A. Neblett

Our art Professors seemed to have been quite interested with it, so we were given the chance to meet her.  We went to Lalit Kala Academy here in Chennai where she had her works exhibited for everyone to see.  She was also there was very kind enough to show us her works. She is a wonderful lady, her art reflects many things. I found that her Woodcut painting, made out of blocks of wood cut and then slopped with paint and applied onto paper, was awesome.

She showed everyone around and told us how all the paintings and stuff in the gallery was her 10 years of work. I liked many of the Charcoal and Pastel works which she had done. She also had made lots of quick portraits using charcoal of people she met on subway in New York and many people whom she met in Chennai. Even one of her students from Government Arts College was also present there and told us how she had taught the woodcut, printmaking and etc. She was very helpful and even gave her website address and her email id and told us to send her any questions regarding art. I really liked the way she explained it to us. I could clearly see that she was very helpful.

We came to know that our Professors were also working in Lalit Kala Acedemy on some paintings. After we had seen Marcia’s work we went to see their work. We have a male and a female  professor for Art, so we saw the paintings made by both of them. I found that their paintings was a manifestation of their personality. My Sir had made a painting which showed a disciplined confusion(yeah quite weird to explain) and our Mam had a painting depicting a lone girl who has everything in her reach. It is there were you understand that people actually paint a manifestation of themselves on canvas.

This trip was very informative for me since we are learning something that is closely related to art so, I found this kind of interesting. If you guys want to take a look at Marcia Neblett’s works check out the link below. I was even able to dig up her blog which is quite frequently updated too.
