Tux BOSS is IN

I agree that the title seems to be a bit cocky but not as funny as you might think it is. I was actually trying to tell about the new Operating System released by C-DAC(stands for Centre for Developmentt of Advanced Computing). It seems to have been developed with the help of the Central Government and Tamil Nadu State Government. I found this advertisement in The New Indian Express.

As soon as I saw this I thought of checking it up on the net and found some pretty funny stuff. First of all the name of the Operating System is Bharath Operating System Solutions[BOSS(Now thats the funniest thing I ever heard, specially the Solutions part)] which you might have seen from the picture I took of that advertisement. The Operating System seems to be Debian based(no prizes on guessing which distro its based on). The look is very similar to that of Ubuntu but just different colour scheme. The screenshots in the newspaper advertisement makes it look like it is running Compiz Fusion but the screenshots on their site seem to show that it is running on beryl. I have no idea what it is running exactly.

Also it is a three CD thing. That means it has one Install CD, one Live CD and one Utility CD. Utility CD contains:

This CD consists of workstation related packages, like Apache webserver, egroupware collaboration tool, webmin – GUI for administrative tasks PHP, Mysql, Postgresql, Educational tools, Openoffice fonts and some other language fonts ,etc. You can find out the usage of the Utility CD and about these extra packages below. This BOSS Utility CD or Addon CD contains the packages related to workstation.

It has many language packs and stuffs. I believe if the government is able to make people attracted to this Operating System,we might find many people actually interested in Open Source softwares. But the problem is once the Government does something it just forgets about the whole thing and leaves it hanging I hope they don’t do that with this project. I will download the LIVE CD and then try it maybe even write about it.

Why do I think the naming will just not suit it in work environments? :P

That definitely won’t suit the working environment but Indians always want to sound rocking thats the reason for the name I guess.
