Scheduling in Utorrent

Posted by karthiksn

I have been thinking to type this for a long time now. I had taken screen shots for this long time back. I have now got the time and the mind to type. Now below is the simplest way to setup scheduling in utorrent. It’s quite easy since scheduling is an internal part of it rather than like in Azureus, where it is a plugin so read this carefully. Though it’s quite self explanatory still newbies will like this as I have explained this step by step.

These are the steps you will have follow to get scheduling working. I have taken the model time for the scheduler to work from 2:00am to 7:59am (BSNL Dataone free timing).

Preferences

  1. Start your utorrent and press Ctrl+P or go to Options->Preferences.
    Enable Scheduler
  2. Then click on Scheduler.
  3. Now you will have to enable the scheduler for which you will have to check the box which says “Enable Scheduler”. This will allow for us to start the Scheduler.
    Scheduling
  4. Next step needs a bit of explaining. You can see that there are some thing around 24 boxes X 7 rows = 168 boxes. The rows represent each day from Monday to Sunday and each of the 24 boxes next to the days represent 59 minutes of the day starting from 12:00 am to 12:59 am and ending at 23:00 to 23:59. Then there are the dark green boxes, light green boxes and white boxes. The dark green boxes means that at that specific time the download will be at full speed. The light green box means the speed of the torrents will be according to what you set (which can be set below it). The white box means the downloads are queued or to put simply waiting for the right time. Here you can change the color in the box by simply clicking them once to make them light green and again to make it white and again to make it dark green again (One small trick is to make one box white and without clicking again or releasing the mouse button move the mouse to the parts which you want to keep white, it makes it easy). I have done the setting in picture above for your reference. Another thing to note is that you will never have to use the light green color box but you can use it to keep the bandwith usage to minimum but it might spike sometimes increasing from the speed set by you, so beware.
  5. So just simply click “Apply” and “OK” to finish it.

Final Out come

Now you can sleep safely and be rest assured that your utorrent will download all those things you want correctly at the free time. And if you are scared that the BSNL Dataone times might be late just change your desktop clock to about 10 mins or so late, just to be on the safer side.

thanks for the scheduler …. but should i give any no in d column provided for limited upload and download rate ? bcoz d torrent is not starting at d scheduled time..it stays queued…. can u help pl. wat could be d reason

  2. karthiksn Says:

oh i guess it stays queued because you might have limited the number of downloads. Just go to Preferences and then Queueing there if the number of download is limited to 1 or something u can change it to a higher number. Try this or trying testing it on different time then just to make sure its working.

    Hi,

What should be the numbers in Ltd upload rate and download rate boxes under scheduler settings.

  7. karthiksn Says:

Well, its your wish. You can enter some speed to limit the bandwith usage. Suppose, you have a 2mbps(250KBps) connection but you want to use just 1mbps(125KBps) then you can enter 125 in the download limit. It’s not necessary at all, it’s only useful if you have other downloads in other programs at the same time.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the quick response.
The problem is that i had configured it exactly the same way that u hae mentioned in ur Tutorial and also left the Ltd upload rate and download rate boxes blank.
I added my torrents at 12PM and left the internet connection. When i got up at 6AM, there was no downloading going on. Not even a single KB.
So please help me out if im doing anything wrong. The utorrent version 1.7.5

Hmm.. did you pause your downloads manually, if you did that then they won’t start on their own. I don’t find any reason why they don’t start on their own you can try to check them by doing it at a different time and sit and watch why the don’t change. And yeah when you schedule all the torrents get queued and start when the time is exactly as you have set.

My scheduler recognises turn off (White) as go full speed (dark green).
I have a universal setting of 6 kbs upload and 0 (unlimited) download.
In the scheduler I have set up light green as 3 kbs upload and 10 kbs download.
If I set the scheduler box for the current time to light green it works properly, the graph for the torrent correctly immediately displays the new maximum up & downs, and the actual up and downs trend towards these values over 10 or so seconds.
When I set the scheduler box for the current time to white the maximum download graph line goes to 0, which seems to mean unlimited, the maximum upload goes to 6 kbs, the actual upload adjusts to 6 and the actual download goes up to about 40 kbs.
THis is the same as if I change the box for the current time to dark green. In fact changing between white and dark green doies not change the maximum up or down values at all.
Changing to light green imposes the values noted in the scheduler box correctly.
Any ideas on why white (turn off) is being treated identically to dark green (use universal setting)
    Torrent was not forced.
    thanks
    If I change it
