The Biggest Bus Station

Posted by karthiksn

I happened to go to near-by Bus Depot to drop off someone who had come to our home. We had gone to Koyambedu Bus Station and when I went there I thought we had come to some kind of airport. Ihad heard many things about it, how great it was and all, but I didn’t think it was so huge. The place was damn big and it seemed to me that it was just like any other airport. When I went inside it I realised how big it was. Its architecture is what that caught my eye, It seems the design was quite different it resembled like a railway station when I looked at some part and like a Bus Depot when we went ahead and overall it looked like an airport. It intrigued me quite a lot. I was admiring the great pain that was taken to build it as its difficult to do such things due to political pressure. Now I checked wikipedia for pics but I found that the bus teminus is really known as The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus or CMBT. I guess it’s always good to look it up in the wikipedia. I found this piece of information there too:

The New CMBT commenced operations on 18 November 2002 with three buses being flagged off by the (former as of 2006)Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa. It was built at a cost of Rs 1,030,000,000 and can handle over 2,000 buses and 200,000 passengers per day.

Well you have to see it to believe it, it’s South Asia’s biggest bus station. I was flattered by the way it is maintained. It is much more well maintained compared to the Railway Station here.
