Google Spreadsheets Review

Posted by karthiksn

First of all sorry for not posting for so long. I have got busy with my studies so don’t expect more than 3 or 4 posts a month for this year.

Topics are very rare which I like to discuss but my all time favourite is Google making some new software or giving us some AJAX application to use. The latest one in their line is Google Spreadsheets. If there is anyone who doesn’t know what a spreadsheet is then the simplest example would Microsoft Excel. Now this can be said as one of those pioneer applications which will introduce a revolution. It will enable you to work on softwares which are not even there in the computer you are working this will be very helpful in course of time. Now I wanted to see if we can really work on these thing or its just for the show so I tested it. I have uploaded the pics too.

Google Spreadsheets1

If you see this the opening page which is very much like any spreadsheets software’s starting look.

Google Spreadsheets2

Okay if you look close you can make out what I was trying to do. I was trying to automatically get the numbers in numerical order like 1,2,3….. and so on, but it doesn’t have that facility which is one of my favourites . Dissapointing!

Google Spreadsheets3

Trying to fill up those cells was trying one of those classic examples I was taught in class.

Google Spreadsheets4

I merged two cells which is very simple and very useful at times

Google Spreadsheets5

In this screenshot I have added the numbers using the method I did in MS Excel.

Google Spreadsheets6

I had to see what all other mathematical functions it could do and when I saw I was dumbstruck because the list was very long. Pleasing indeed.

Google Spreadsheets7

After creating first thing anyone would want is to get it in a recognizable format you can download it as an .xls file .csv file or a plain HTML file. This was needed after all it is something very helpful.

Google Spreadsheets8

Saving the spreadsheet onto the computer.

Google Spreadsheets9

This is how it looks after you open it in MS Excel.

Google Spreadsheets10

Saving the spreadsheet online for further use is also a very good idea.

Google Spreadsheets11

You can open earlier saved file like this in the screenshot.

And one great thing is that if two people are working on the same file then you can chat with the chat feature in it. I was alone so only my name was there in the chat window.

Google Spreadsheets will be a benchmark on which such future applications will be judged upon though its not a great but quite a good innovation from google.

Well, this is a good initiative towards shared spreadsheets, that may be very well usefull for us, software engineers.

Yeah and rather it will help 2 three people to work on same spreadsheet at the same time which in turn reduces time taken which is very useful
