Ban on right to express
Tamilnadu Govt bans the screening of Da Vinci Code which was slated to release on June 2nd.
Da Vinci Code is a work of fiction; still, many people take it upon themselves to make the work a religious controversy. Everyone has a right to express himself or herself in the free world. Movie and entertainment are forms of art. These forms of art should not be mixed with religious sentiments as they are meant to entertain the audience and not to disrupt the peace and harmony. Still we can see so many cases where people have linked the movie with their religious sentiments. The book itself was banned in many countries. The book is written by Dan Brown and books are supposed to be entertaining. Most books are works of fiction still people have protested against the book.
Not screening the film in many parts of the country leads to other problems such as piracy. As the film is not screened people tend to get the pirated copies of the movie and watch the film. As the film has created, no actually people have created controversies over the film so it makes the film more worthwhile to watch. The ban has done nothing but increase the interest of the people in the movie and this has given rise to piracy which is one of the problems faced by the film-makers nowadays.
We have seen such controversies in Indian cinemas also which was related to politics and regionalism.

Well, a clarification is that Dan Brown touts this works as mostly non-fiction from his “extensive” research into Mary Magdelene. However, he works this information into the book to make a spell binding thriller. The religious authorities are worried that people who don’t know much about their religion might be swayed by this work. I think that’s hilarious. They are trying to ban it because people might think that is true. The governing bodies are making too big a deal out of this. As you mention, this movie will be pirated over and over again, and the governments are fueling that fire. MPAA will not like this one bit..

Well if they believe that their own followers faith is dwindling then I must say that its their problem but this isnt their hands its in the hand of the goverment and if we notice wherever Congress or affiliated party is in power the movie is banned there. Its all political crap I must say.
And about the piracy part I just looked at today’s newspaper and saw that customs siezed a bag with 150 pirated DVDs of “Da Vinci Code” from Chennai airport plus some 700 DVDs of other movies. Supposedly these were to be the master copies which are used to make more copies

What? Why did they seize it? Are cd/dvds too banned here?
June 9th, 2006 at 6:45 pm
Karthik, that is the faith’s problem, and shouldn’t inconvenience those who don’t follow the faith. You are absolutely right.
Qwerty, if they knew that there were pirated movies, why wouldn’t they seize it? It is illegal after all. They must have had a good tip..

No i guess a complaint needs to be registered for the police to catch eng movies. Tamil piracy is alone banned… btw, chennai’s biggest pirate market is directly opp to North Beach police station and the assistant commisioner’s office…

[...] Well this is a follow-up post to one of my older posts. I saw in newspaper last week that the ban on the movie “Da Vinci Code” was lifted by the Court. The twist in the story is that they have fined the police for postponing the screening of the movie. The court had said that the police had not followed one of the basic principlesof an democratic country which was right to express oneself. Court has given strict warning to police for not repeating such a thing again as the reasons given by police personnels were not satisfactory. The court had said if they feared violence then they should be prepared for it rather than postponing the screening of the movie. Atleast I am happy that atlast it will be screened here I look forward to watch the movie in theatre and I believe in the court and democratic goverment of India now [...]
